In a significant development for international air travel, Saudi Arabia’s national airline, Saudia, has announced the launch of direct flights between Riyadh and Tokyo, set to commence in November 2026. The new route, originating from Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, will feature three weekly flights. This initiative is a collaborative effort with the Air Connectivity Program and the Saudi Tourism Authority, aimed at strengthening travel and tourism connections.
The introduction of this service is anticipated to enhance tourism, trade, and business interactions between Saudi Arabia and Japan. By providing an additional international access point, the route is expected to improve connectivity to the Kingdom, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. This vision, along with the National Aviation Strategy and National Tourism Strategy, aspires to position Saudi Arabia as a central global hub for tourism and logistics.
Efforts by the Saudi Tourism Authority are underway to engage with partners in Japan to craft travel packages that highlight Saudi Arabia as an appealing destination for Japanese tourists. This strategy is designed to complement the new flight route, aiming to increase the number of visitors from Japan and further solidify international tourism links.
Additionally, the new flight connection is set to facilitate travel ahead of the AFC Asian Cup 2027, which Saudi Arabia will host. This initiative underscores the Kingdom’s dedication to streamlining international travel for major sporting events and enhancing its global connectivity.
Currently, Saudia operates flights to over 100 destinations worldwide, and the airline is in the process of expanding its fleet. Plans are underway to introduce 112 new aircraft, further supporting its mission to extend its reach and improve service offerings on an international scale.
