Kushner Utilizes Tech Diplomacy in Talks with Hamas for Gaza Ceasefire

by admin477351

In a significant diplomatic effort by the United States, Jared Kushner, the son-in-law and envoy of former President Donald Trump, held a meeting with Khalil al-Hayya, the political chief of Hamas, in Egypt on Sunday. This meeting aimed to revive a stalled ceasefire plan in Gaza, with Kushner scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the following day. The US-backed plan outlines a gradual disarmament of Hamas, a halt on Israeli military operations, and a withdrawal from parts of Gaza, alongside reconstruction efforts and the deployment of international forces to maintain security.

Despite the proposed road map, tensions remain high as Hamas insists on Israel ceasing attacks and withdrawing to the agreed “yellow line” before proceeding. Hamas has also linked the relinquishment of its heavier weaponry to progress towards establishing a Palestinian state, a concept opposed by Netanyahu’s administration. Netanyahu has maintained that Israeli forces will not conduct a full withdrawal from Gaza until Hamas is completely disarmed, resulting in a standstill on key aspects of the ceasefire plan, including reconstruction efforts and the deployment of international forces.

Kushner’s talks with Hamas, attended by officials from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, aimed to secure Hamas’s commitment to the disarmament aspect of the plan before his meeting with Netanyahu. Additionally, Kushner is expected to be joined by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Board of Peace director Nickolay Mladenov in discussions with the Israeli leader. This renewed diplomatic initiative comes amid criticism from several regional countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Pakistan, and Indonesia, who have denounced Israel’s rejection of the road map and urged immediate action to avoid further delays.

The timing of these diplomatic efforts is critical as Netanyahu faces mounting political pressure ahead of Israel’s October election. Within his coalition, there are ministers advocating for a more stringent approach to the Gaza situation, casting uncertainty over the future of the ceasefire plan. The outcome of Kushner’s meetings could play a pivotal role in shaping the region’s path forward, as efforts continue to address longstanding conflicts and tensions.
