Egypt Limits Military Support to Saudi Arabia to Defensive Aid Only

by admin477351

Egypt has clarified its stance on military support to Saudi Arabia, emphasizing that any assistance would be strictly defensive. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stated that Egypt is ready to help safeguard Saudi territory and other Arab states if requested, but would refrain from engaging in offensive operations, particularly in Yemen.

This declaration comes as Egypt considers a legislative proposal that would authorize the president to approve defensive military assistance to Saudi Arabia. Parliamentary discussions on the measure have been postponed until October 26. Under Egypt’s constitutional framework, any deployment of armed forces abroad for combat requires consultation with the National Defense Council and a two-thirds majority approval from parliament.

El-Sisi underscored the interconnectedness of Egypt’s national interests with the security of Arab countries, particularly those in the Gulf. His statement aligns with Egypt’s broader policy of noninterference in other nations’ internal affairs, protection of national institutions, and opposition to armed militias.

The context of this announcement is heightened regional security concerns, driven by increased Houthi missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia. These tensions have also raised alarms over maritime safety in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital passage for international shipping.

In a related development, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty highlighted Cairo’s efforts to bolster regional security through cooperation with Red Sea countries. These efforts focus on economic development, logistical coordination, and fostering closer partnerships.

Egypt’s stance reflects a strategic approach to supporting Saudi Arabia’s security needs while consciously avoiding direct involvement in Yemen’s offensive conflicts. This careful positioning seeks to maintain stability in the region without escalating hostilities.
