Saudi Arabia and Greece have reinforced their commitment to enhancing cooperation in energy, investment, and security, marking a century of diplomatic relations. During talks in Riyadh, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of safeguarding international shipping routes and ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies, particularly in light of recent attacks on energy infrastructure that threaten global markets.
The discussions highlighted a significant focus on energy collaboration, with both nations agreeing to expedite the development of an electricity interconnection project. This initiative aims to facilitate power exchanges between Saudi Arabia and Europe via Greece. Additionally, they explored the potential for exporting clean hydrogen from Saudi Arabia to Greece and other European Union markets, alongside investments in renewable and conventional energy sectors.
Bilateral trade, which reached approximately $1.7 billion in 2025, reflects the growing economic engagement between the two countries. The leaders committed to expanding ties in infrastructure, construction, logistics, and technology. Greece acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s role in stabilizing global oil markets and welcomed efforts to diversify export routes through projects like the East-West Pipeline.
Digital connectivity was another priority area, with both parties expressing support for the EMC submarine cable project aimed at enhancing communications infrastructure between Eastern and Western regions. The leaders pledged to coordinate efforts to ensure the project’s timely completion.
In addition to economic and energy topics, the meeting underscored intentions to strengthen defence and security cooperation. This includes initiatives focused on counterterrorism, combating terrorist financing, cybersecurity, intelligence sharing, and professional training.
Both countries reiterated their commitment to international climate agreements and agreed to foster cooperation in fields such as carbon management, artificial intelligence, space technology, healthcare, education, tourism, and culture. These discussions are part of an ongoing strategic partnership established in 2022, underscoring the growing importance of Saudi-Greek relations in energy security and regional connectivity.
