The successful interception of a Houthi drone by Saudi Arabia’s air defenses on September 15 underscores the ongoing threat to the security of the holy city of Mecca. The Saudi-led coalition reported that the drone was destroyed south of Mecca before it could breach the restricted airspace, highlighting the persistent danger posed by Houthi forces amid heightened security concerns across the region.
Turki al-Malki, a spokesperson for the coalition, emphasized the inviolability of the two holy mosques and the safety of pilgrims, declaring it a “red line” that necessitates decisive protective measures. This incident marks the second known attempt by the Houthis to target Mecca, following a ballistic missile threat in 2017.
The Houthis, however, have denied these allegations. Their spokesperson, Hazem al-Assad, refuted claims of targeting the sacred city, presenting a contradictory narrative to the Saudi account of events. Despite this denial, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has condemned the reported attack and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Mecca, Medina, and other revered Islamic sites.
